Partners for Hope
Lodging is of particular concern for patients and families who travel great distances for care at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center, especially those whose treatment protocol requires long-term daily therapy or hospitalization.
Join a passionate group of Arizona business leaders who are committed to assisting cancer patients and their families with the cost of local lodging during their treatment at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Philanthropic investment from corporate leaders, called Partners for Hope, supports the Patient Housing Assistance Endowment. This permanent endowment will provide financial assistance with the cost of lodging to qualifying patients and families who must stay near the Cancer Center for extended periods of time.
By becoming a Partner for Hope, you can help cancer patients continue to receive the best care and support along with the assurance of a safe, comfortable and affordable place to stay.
Thanks to a generous contribution from Thunderbird Charities, the program is already in operation. Patients battling a spectrum of cancers—ovarian, esophageal, acute myeloid leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, salivary duct, carcinoma and more—have received much-needed support, enabling them to focus on healing.
Treatment at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center
Becky Rush, Hematology/Stem Cell Transplant Nurse Navigator at the Cancer Center, was able to help one young patient during the holidays. She shared that in December 2019, housing plans fell through for a young stem-cell transplant patient during treatment. This patient’s home was beyond the requisite geographical radius for safe monitoring—more than 30 miles or one hour away—and was a small shared space with eight family members and only one bathroom.
“This would potentially expose our patient to infection, especially during flu season, and put him at high risk for hospitalization for infection,” Becky explained. “It was a blessing to be able to apply this family for the financial assistance program and keep the patient and caregiver safe and close to [the Cancer Center].”
