Construction of a new Wellness Center in the Home Away from Home patient housing community next to Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center will air as the two-part season finale of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition on Feb. 13 and 20 at 8/7c on ABC and stream on Hulu.

The Extreme Makeover: Home Edition crew came to Gilbert in September 2024 to film the show’s signature round-the-clock, five-day construction and opening of the Wellness Center. The new Wellness Center augments the community of eight private homes generously built, furnished, and donated to the Banner Health Foundation by Scottsdale-based homebuilder Taylor Morrison, the official construction partner of this season’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. The episodes will focus in on a few Banner MD Anderson patients as they journey through their cancer diagnosis, treatment, and move into one of the homes.

Having premiered on Jan. 2, 2025, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is a reimagining of the popular TV show that aired on ABC from 2004 until 2012. In this new version, Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin, co-founders of global lifestyle brand The Home Edit, harness their organizational expertise to thoughtfully design and specifically tailor each space from the inside out. Like the original, the new series showcases heartwarming stories, inspired volunteers, and mind-blowing builds. Shearer is a breast cancer survivor who felt particularly moved by the Home Away from Home community and Wellness Center, as they serve those who must travel far from home for lifesaving care.

“Having been through cancer treatment myself, I can’t emphasize enough the importance of having your support system nearby and a safe, serene place to rest as your body heals,” said Shearer at the grand opening of the Home Away from Home community, where The Home Edit provided their signature organizing system to the first residents. “I was fortunate enough to have treatment available in my hometown so I can only imagine the stress of having to travel and worry about these logistics. Joanna and I are thrilled to play a small role in making these houses into homes.”

Open since June 2024, the homes will house more than 100 qualifying patients and their care partners each year who travel to the Valley for treatment at Banner MD Anderson—giving them a free, comfortable, safe place to rest and heal during their cancer journey. The Wellness Center gives those residing in the community a place to gather, cook and share meals, play games, watch movies, read, and build camaraderie among those on a similar journey through cancer.

Since inception in 2019, the Home Away from Home program has been funded solely by charitable gifts to the Banner Health Foundation from hundreds of donors and community partners. In addition to the eight private homes, the program provides free local hotel stays for qualifying patients who must stay near the Cancer Center for daily treatment, post-surgical monitoring, or clinical trial participation.

The Banner Health Foundation is building a permanent endowment to provide enduring support to operate and sustain the Home Away from Home program, including the hotel program, the housing community, and the Wellness Center. To support the endowment, make your tax-deductible donation online now.
