From creative challenge holes to excellent food on and off the course to the now-legendary Mystery Hat Wall, this year’s Banner Children’s Open had it all. Under blue skies on April 12 at Wildfire Golf Club at the JW Marriott Resort Desert Ridge, nearly 300 golfers helped raise more than $820,000 – a new record – to benefit the Child Life program at Banner Children’s medical centers in Arizona.
Funded entirely by philanthropy, Banner’s Child Life program is led by a team of certified Child Life Specialists who create a positive experience for hospitalized children and their families. Working with pediatric patients, their parents and siblings, Child Life Specialists use a variety of tools and skills to reduce stress and anxiety while promoting normal growth and development. Through play, pre-operative teaching, and distraction and coping techniques, these specialized—and, very special—professionals become an indispensable part of the health care team and an invaluable resource for families.
Serving as this year’s Co-Ambassadors to the Banner Children's Open, Royce, Piper and Peyton represented the thousands of Arizona kids whose lives have been touched by Banner Children’s. Their special bonds with the Child Life teams have helped these patients and their families face this difficult chapter of their lives with more ease, comfort, and peace of mind.
Bryan Adams and Jeff Cordell, tournament co-chairs, ushered in new elements this year, including an award for Best Dressed Foursome and “wow factor” prize and raffle packages.
